FAQs for Potential DBS Coaches and DBSROC Providers

How do I become an MSF DirtBike School SM (DBS) Coach?
If you are an experienced off-highway motorcycle rider, own your own dirt bike and have good basic riding skills, you may qualify to become an MSF-certified DBS Coach. If you qualify, you will need to complete an intensive four-day Coach Preparation (CP) course. During the CP course, you'll learn the fundamentals of training others under the DBS. As a DBS Coach, you can conduct courses on your own sites as a DBSROC Provider or you may offer your services to other DBSROC Providers. All new DBS Coach applicants must be affiliated with or become a DBSROC Provider to conduct DBS training.

How do I become a DBSROC Provider?
Please call DBS Operations 888.OFF.HWY1 (888.633.4991) and select option 2. DBS will send you documents that need to be completed prior to the Coach Prep you will be attending. Providers can include motorcycle dealers, managed public riding areas, trail management entities, MSF street motorcycle training locations, colleges, and other qualified companies and individuals.

Who conducts the Coach Preparation course?
MSF-certified Coach Trainers conduct the course. These specially trained individuals have completed the MSF's Coach Trainer Preparation Course and are authorized to train candidates for MSF DBS Coach certification.

What qualifications do I need to enroll?
You must be an experienced off highway motorcyclist. You should have several years of varied riding experience and be at least 18 years of age. As a Coach, you need good communication skills. As a Coach, you'll be required to teach at least two DBS Courses in a one year period to maintain the certification.

What does the course cover and what are the completion requirements?
The CP is a 4-day course, typically Thursday - Sunday. As a part of the course, you'll be required to pass a riding-skill test and a written knowledge test. During the CP, you'll learn how to teach the DBS curriculum. You'll practice teaching in the classroom, learn how to manage the range exercises, and how to evaluate and coach students as they develop their riding skills. At the end of the training portion of the course, you'll be given a knowledge test. You must pass it to continue in the program. The CP culminates when you and your classmates teach a complete DBS to a group of new riders. The Coach Trainer will evaluate your teaching performance as part of the completion requirements.

How does the MSF support my DirtBike School?
The MSF provides the DBS curriculum, maintains a public website, a referral line, offers insurance and supplies for teaching DBS classes. We also offer a Loan Program for training motorcycles from most of our member companies. DBS Operations is constantly in contact with the off-road industry to help spread the safety message to the community. In the near future, we will provide online class scheduling, student enrollment and class completion through the new National Online Course Enrollment.

When is the DBS CP course offered?
Typically a course is offered when there is a need for Coaches in a particular area. Regularly scheduled Coach Preps are offered in these states: Arizona, California, Georgia, Ohio or Texas. We also offer on site Coach Preps. To find out more information please call 888.OFF.HWY1 (888.633.4991) and select option 2.

What does the CP course cost?
The cost for tuition and materials is $595.00. Candidates will receive an MSF DBS Coach Guide and range cards. All travel expenses related to the course are the responsibility of the Candidate. If you enroll in a course, be prepared to ride every day. We prefer that you bring full off-road gear. However, if you do not own off-road gear you will need a DOT-approved helmet; over-the-ankle, sturdy leather footwear; long pants; long-sleeved shirt or jacket; and full-fingered gloves (preferably leather). Be prepared to set aside time during off-class hours to study. This is an intensive program that requires a lot of work and concentration. Do not enroll unless you can attend class every day. The MSF highly recommends you complete a DirtBike School course prior to the Coach Preparation (CP) course. For more information or to enroll call Toll-Free: 888.OFF.HWY1 (888.633.4991)
